AROUND THE COUNTY w Unified Sports League Super Smash Grand Championship

Saturday, January 31, 2026

MORE INFO ON THE SMASH BROS TOURNAMENT

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (January 21, 2026) -- The Unified Esports League (UESL) will host a world-first Super Smash Grand Championship for individuals with special needs on February 21 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at The Bornemann Theatre located on the TERI Campus for Life in San Marcos.

The inaugural championship will bring together 24 finalists from UESL’s six San Diego County and Imperial County locations to compete for a team trophy, as well as individual first-, second-, and third-place individual recognition. Participants are currently preparing to earn the title of Unified Esports League Grand Champion.

UESL and TERI both serve people with disabilities through inclusive, skill-building programs. TERI currently hosts UESL’s Technology Center in San Marcos, supporting children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through hands-on technology and gaming experiences.

“The Bornemann Theatre at TERI Campus of Life is the perfect location for this inaugural event,” says UESL Founder and CEO Matthew Iske. “Our goal is to create opportunities where players with IDD can be part of a team, building friendships and learning through positive gaming experiences.”

The Bornemann Theatre is both a public live entertainment venue and the performing arts center for TERI program participants with autism and other developmental disabilities.

UESL is a San Diego based organization that provides its Technology Education Program to help those with special needs develop skills through their passion for technology. UESL programs operate during after-school hours, five days a week at its various locations in San Diego and Imperial Counties. UESL opened its doors in 2023 after several years of planning and developing its curriculum.

“This program not only teaches players the values of being on a team but serves as an opportunity to make friends while learning about new technologies in the video game and tech industries,” adds Iske.

At the event, there will be light refreshments hosted on the patio next to The Bornemann Theatre entrance, beginning at 2:00 p.m. for guests as they arrive. Live Super Smash characters will be present and available to have pictures taken as well. The Grand Championship competition begins at 3:00 p.m.

Channeling the spirit of GP, Monique advises, "The best time to take charge of your financial future is now. Invest in yourself by shifting your mindset and establishing positive habits. Well-managed money can support you for life, offering rewards beyond what you might imagine." She also cautions against perceived shortcuts, emphasizing the importance of discipline and adaptive planning, particularly in the realm of real estate investment.

OLD FASHION RADIO HOUR WEBSITE

In 1997, and in the providence of God, a group of individuals came together who had been much affected by the original Old Fashioned Revival Hour. Each expressed a longing to see it back on the radio. Their gifts and backgrounds seemed to complement one another’s perfectly, and they sensed that the Lord was calling them to move ahead with assurance and boldness.

Finally, in June of 2002 on a single station in Ventura, California, Dr. Dan Fuller, son of founder Dr. Charles Fuller, gave the invitation for listeners to come to Jesus on that first Old Fashioned Revival Hour rebroadcast.

Today, the Old Fashioned Revival Hour is aired on some 120 stations across the United States and is available anytime right here at OFRH.com. Besides being a great joy to those who grew up with this broadcast many years ago, young people are discovering the Old Fashioned Revival Hour for the first time. We’re encouraged because today the younger generation is showing a genuine interest in vintage cars, the music of the Big Band era as well as art deco in architecture and home décor. In other words, retro is “in.”

Convinced that the good news about Jesus is vital and “in” for every generation, we are thrilled with the privilege of making the Old Fashioned Revival Hour available to a cross-generational audience today.

Around the County w Unified Esports League (UESL)

Thursday, July 3, 2025

https://www.unifiedesl.com/

Unified Esports League (UESL) Make friends. Play on a team.Explore + develop passion in the fast-growing esports + technology industries.

What began as a spontaneous coffee meeting between two strangers in 2021 has evolved into an expanding esports education program now serving dozens of families across San Diego County.

Unified Esports League (UESL), developed by Matthew Iske and Tony Rubino, offers inclusive programming where individuals with disabilities engage in technology, art and gaming while building critical life and social skills. After 18 months of planning and development, UESL officially launched in 2023 as a vendor through the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC).

“Our primary focus is on social and emotional skills and helping people to get out of their room and engage with their peers and pursue goals through their passion for gaming and technology,” said Iske, UESL’s founder and CEO.

Iske, a teacher and non-profit leader, met Rubino in 2021. Rubino, a longtime advocate and coach for individuals with disabilities, approached Iske with a simple proposition:

“You don’t know me, and I don’t know you, but we’re going to have coffee.” That meeting led to the early ideas that would form UESL.

Over the next year and a half, the two traveled, collaborated, and designed a curriculum that blends esports with wellness and community engagement.

Rubino, who has worked with the special needs community in Poway for 27 years, believes that sports and teamwork play a vital role in growth.

“I have learned to understand the challenges that they face as they go into adulthood,” Rubino said. “I found that sports was a great way to bring a community together and teach them what being on a team is all about, how to win, how to lose and pursue something that they enjoy — and that has translated into a lot of great things.”

Today, UESL supports roughly 40 families per site through rotating sessions of 12 to 18 participants. Clients range in age from 8 to 40, and each location blends individuals of different ages to foster support and mentorship.

“Isolation really is a challenge, so the more things we can do to create a network and have these young people get together — if we can create a safe environment, which we do — then it’s a total win,” Rubino said.

UESL participants engage in gaming, creative technology, physical wellness breaks and debriefing sessions designed to promote healthy tech habits and peer connection. Some even use driving simulators to prepare for their driver’s license. Others use tools like Procreate to pursue digital art. One student designed the team’s jersey logo in just 20 minutes.

“They all have so much potential in so many ways,” Iske said. “Being able to be there and help them make progress has made a huge impact on me personally.”

The goal, Iske explained, is not just to play games but to use gaming as a tool for  growth.

“When people think of video games, they think of hot Cheetos and somebody slumped over in a chair,” he said. “It’s one thing to be playing eight hours on end alone in your room, and it’s another thing to be playing in a room where you have an education plan and you’re engaging with your peers and your coach.”

Iske and Rubino shared the story of one of their participants, Thomas, who said he found a sense of belonging, confidence and happiness through the program.

“He told us that he’s the happiest he’s ever been in his life due to an environment where he can do something he enjoys and engage with his peers,” Iske said.

Rubino echoed that impact.

“That’s something you don’t forget,” he said.

Some families even choose to make UESL their child’s only source of screen time, allowing them to engage with technology in a structured, social way while remaining focused on other areas throughout the day.

As the program continues to grow, Iske and Rubino say the mission remains the same: to build inclusive spaces where passion for gaming and technology drives connection, confidence and personal development.

“When you put people in a peer group where everybody enjoys the same thing and experience that passion together, good things are going to happen,” Iske said.

THRU THE BIBLE WEBSITE

At the core of what Thru the Bible is and what we do, is the conviction that the Bible is true and trustworthy. We believe God uses His Word uniquely in each of our lives to transform the way we think, believe, and live.

How does He do this? We believe that, in part, He does this by telling us His own story: The story of His love, His redemption—a story that He planned and put into place before our time began. At its heart, it’s the story of how He has opened the way for us to know Him, to love and obey Him, to grow deeper day by day in the ways we trust Him. It’s a beautiful story that gets better every time we hear it.

It’s the story Thru the Bible tells every day on the air and invites people to listen.

Dr. J. Vernon McGee, our founder and teacher, loved to tell the story more than anything else in the world. He began teaching on the radio in 1941, hoping that the San Gabriel Valley and the metropolitan Los Angeles area would pay attention and respond to the wonders of the Bible, simply told.

And to his surprise, people listened. Because not only is the Bible a good story, and Dr. McGee a good storyteller, but through the Bible is also the primary way God draws us to Himself.

While teaching in the book of Hebrews, Dr. McGee said, “The only way you and I are going to stay close to Jesus is to stay close to His Word . . . that’s why we’re spending time in the Word of God, and the reason I read letters from people on the air.  They say ‘for the first time I found out about the joy of the Lord.’ The Christian life has been a yoke on them; all they knew was duty and discipline.  But when you spend time studying the Bible, you can’t help but be drawn to the Person of Jesus. That’s what you should listen for in the letters we read—listen for the joy of walking close to Jesus.”

That’s why it is not unusual for there to be many longtime, repeat travelers on “The Bible Bus,” as Dr. McGee calls the journey we take through the Word every five years. People come aboard and stay aboard because they grow closer to Jesus with each trip. And the good news is, there’s always room for more on the Bible Bus. So invite your friends.

But we must be clear: People don’t come aboard because of Dr. McGee. They come because Dr. McGee points them to Jesus. No one would be more surprised than J. Vernon McGee at the worldwide response to his country preaching, with simple ways and endearing mannerisms. Yes, we honor his courage to answer the call, but we give the glory to God for the generations of lives changed. And we’ll keep telling those stories until Jesus comes again.

We hope that in telling our story, we’re really telling your story . . . about the joy you found in walking closer to Jesus . . . about the gratitude you feel for that window of understanding into His Word . . . for the first time you heard the name of Jesus and knew it was Him who you’ve been looking for all along. We are privileged to hear these same stories every day, coming from nearly every nation on earth.

Yes, that’s how far God has taken this simple story—to nearly every nation on earth in over 100 languages. This stunning fact alone testifies to the surpassing power of God at work, using simple jars of clay (see 2 Corinthians 4:7).

The Thru the Bible story is simple . . . and deep. Just like yours. It’s a story of God reaching down to man—and man, reaching back. We’ll be telling these stories to each other throughout eternity, so you won’t mind if we get in good practice now.

We love to tell the Bible’s story . . . the story of Jesus and His love. Join us on the Bible Bus today to hear it again in a new way. We’re saving you a seat.
