Church on the Block
About Minister Gregg Bynum
When I received the call, from Jesus to quit my great job in Northern California, to go serve in the Communities of Watts and Compton in the heart of struggling low-income and gang violence. My initial response was to “Get behind me, Devil.” Having realized that it was a true Calling from the Lord, I quit my job, moved out of my new 3-year-old house, packed a U-Haul and emotionally confused, left everything I loved to a new life in the hood. I still did not understand why God would call ME, having been raised a country boy from a poor Christian family in the rural Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, to one of the toughest inner cities in the world-Watts/ Compton.
The day after my tearful arrival, I felt the extreme Joy of the Lord. God began to teach and show me about how my new congregation, Church on the Block, is what every church is called to be. We are to follow Jesus' example and please the Father, not by trying to work our way into heaven, but to please the Father by loving Him and others being the way to please HIM.
There is an eye-opening fact that many things the Church does today are not even mentioned in the bible. Many times, the church participates in man-made customs like the Bible does not declare that Satan oversees Hell. And the Church often skips over the important preparation for the next life of eternity and are not prepared for the next permanent life that is soon to come.
